Executive Summary
We met up with Kelly Pettingill, Academic Operations Manager, and Tyler Sliker, Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic Director, to hear about Tevera’s impact on the college’s student experiences and administrative processes, specifically the administrative benefits, impact on program improvement, and professional preparation for students.
“I don’t think we could be where we are, with students placed all over the country, without Tevera. ”
-Kelly Pettingill
Kelly Pettingill, Academic Operations Manager, is the overall project manager for Tevera at Falk College. She is tasked with managing relationships with over 820 partnering sites for clinical placements. Two-thirds of these partnerships involve intricate contract processes. She works alongside leaders in all disciplines at Falk College, where more than a dozen programs rely on Tevera for internships and clinical placements. The college’s emphasis on internships as degree requirements, even for online students, necessitated a streamlined system like Tevera to ensure transparency and compliance with accreditation standards.
Tyler Sliker, the Clinical Director of the Marriage and Family Program and a Tevera point person for their program, is responsible for supporting students in their clinical placements as they develop the skills they’ll need to attain licensure and become Marriage and Family Therapists. They have observed that Tevera has allowed students to take ownership of their progress toward required clinical hours, resulting in increased engagement and proactivity.
Administrative Benefits
Increasing Efficiency & Saving Staff Time
Kelly mentions the many administrative benefits Tevera has brought the college. It saves staff time by eliminating the need for manual data entry and spreadsheets. Other tasks related to contract tracking, internship placement, and safety monitoring have become efficient and less labor-intensive. Tevera’s real-time data accessibility even allows administrators to respond promptly to incidents or concerns.
Managing 3x More Partnerships
“I don’t think we could be where we are…with students placed all over the country without Tevera. We were struggling when we had about a third of the sites that we have now to just track contracts. And there were no processes that were transparent at my level for how the departments were placing and tracking students. It was a lot of individual spreadsheets here, there and everywhere.”
-Kelly Pettingill
Supporting Health & Safety
“Knowing where our students are placed, especially in this day and age where the security, health, and safety of our students is so important. Tevera has been invaluable. At any point, I can simply look in Tevera and see where a student is placed. That’s not something that we could easily do before.”
-Kelly Pettingill
Optimizing People Power
“At the dean’s office administrative level, I think that we’re working smarter, not harder. In the past, we had an office coordinator within the Marriage and Family Therapy clinic and a big part of their role was collecting hard copy time sheets and then data entering that into a system. So it was a constant day-in day-out task for that office coordinator to track time sheets.
“The ability to run reports out of Tevera has freed up support staff time to concentrate on some higher-level type tasks such as helping with accreditation and self studies. Overall it has been a total game changer, in that staff’s time is now spent on higher level activities.”
-Kelly Pettingill
Impact on Program Improvement
Enabling Proactive Support & Adjustments in Real Time
Tevera’s ability to collect and analyze data has enabled program improvement as well. Tyler explains that Tevera facilitates the timely identification of student needs, allowing for proactive support and adjustments in real-time. Supervisors’ evaluations, student evaluations, and other data can be aggregated and analyzed easily, leading to informed decision-making for program enhancements.
Real-Time Program Improvements
“We get to be really thoughtful and intentional about data. Whether it’s student evaluations, supervisor evaluations, or any other information, all that data lives within Tevera, making it quick and easy to find and access. As a result, we’re looking at that data more critically. We can spend more time considering program adjustments we’d like to make.”
-Tyler Sliker
Professional Preparation for Students
Helping Students Take Control of Their Professional Development
Both Kelly and Tyler emphasize Tevera’s role in professional preparation. They explain that students should view it as a lifelong tool for tracking clinical hours and preparing for licensure, not just as a requirement for coursework. The platform empowers students to take control of their professional development, increasing engagement and simplifying the licensure application process.
Students Taking Ownership
“One big change I’ve noticed is students really take the reins and own and lead their progress towards their required hours now. As opposed to leaning on an administrator or an advisor to assess their progress, they’re logging hours every day, every week, by themselves and seeing their progress in real-time. There’s an ownership of their progress that I think maybe wasn’t there [before].
They are also being really proactive when working with faculty. They can say ‘Hey, I need a few more cases for my caseload,’ or, ‘This internship site really isn’t giving me the certain type of hour that I need towards my degree. Can you help me work with the site to get what I need?’ or, ‘Are there other options for me?’ So it’s great, students being on top of their hours themselves then allows them to come to faculty and staff with clarity on where they’re needing support.”
-Tyler Sliker
The Final Take
Tevera has had a profound impact at Syracuse University’s Falk College by streamlining administrative workflows, empowering students, and enhancing the overall educational experience. With Tevera, Kelly, Tyler, and their peers can ensure that students are well-prepared for their careers while allowing the college to improve programs continuously.
